Northeast Florida Storms
The Storms That Shaped How We Roof
Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and Jacksonville has had two reminders of what it means in the last decade. Hurricane Matthew passed just offshore in October 2016 with gusts above 75 mph recorded across Duval and St. Johns counties and the highest storm surge measured at Mayport in more than a century. Hurricane Irma arrived in September 2017 as a tropical storm and still pushed the St. Johns River to record flooding downtown and knocked out power across the region.
Between hurricanes, the storms that generate most of our emergency calls are ordinary summer thunderstorms: straight-line wind, hail and falling limbs between June and September. The pattern is the same every time. Roofs with broken seal strips lose shingles first, ridge vents and flashing fail next, and trees do the rest. That is why our replacements are sealed, flashed and nailed above minimum code, and why we push so hard for a free inspection every spring.
Storm Damage Checklist
What to Do After Storm Damage, Step by Step
- Stay safe. Stay off the roof and away from downed lines. If the ceiling is sagging or holding water, move everyone out of that room.
- Limit the damage inside. Move furniture and electronics, put a bucket under the drip, and poke a small hole in a bulging ceiling to let the water out in a controlled way.
- Document what you can see safely. Photos from the ground and inside, with the date. Keep receipts for anything you buy to protect the home.
- Call or text (904) 201-9720. Tell us where the water is coming in. We prioritize active leaks into living space and get a tarp on as soon as it is safe to be on the roof.
- Be careful who you let on your roof. After a big storm, out-of-town crews knock on doors across Jacksonville. Verify any contractor’s license on the Florida DBPR website before signing anything, and don’t sign a contract on the doorstep.
- Permanent repair. Once the roof is dry, you get a written estimate for the permanent fix, whether that is a repair or, for widespread damage, a replacement.
Whether to involve your insurer is your decision and depends on your policy. We don’t advise on claims; we document the damage with photos so you have the facts, and we fix the roof.
Emergency Roof Tarping
What an Emergency Tarp Is, and Isn’t
A tarp is temporary protection, not a repair. Done right it buys you weeks of dry ceilings while the permanent work is scheduled and permitted. Done wrong it leaks at every nail hole and blows off in the next storm. Our tarps run over the ridge so water can’t get under the top edge, are secured with battens rather than loose nails through the field, and are sized to reach past the damaged area to sound roofing.
The tarp price is quoted in writing before we install it, like everything else we do. Then we come back with the permanent repair estimate, and if the roof is at the end of its life you will see a repair price and a replacement price side by side.

Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Are you really available 24/7?
Yes. Call or text (904) 201-9720 any time. After hours we’ll get a crew out to secure the roof, and we’ll schedule the permanent repair as soon as conditions allow.
Can you tarp my roof after a storm?
Yes. If a permanent repair can’t be made right away, we install an emergency tarp to keep water out of your home until the repair is complete.
How do I spot storm damage from the ground?
Look for missing, flipped-back or curled shingles, granules piling up at downspouts, dented vents or flashing, and new stains on ceilings. Creased shingles and hail bruising are hard to see from the ground, so if in doubt, book a free inspection.
What should I do right after storm damage?
Stay off the roof. Move belongings away from any active leak, catch water in a bucket, and take photos of what you can see safely. Then call us. We’ll handle the assessment and temporary protection.
Do you also do the permanent repair or replacement?
Yes. After the emergency work we give you a written estimate for the permanent fix, whether that’s a repair or, for widespread damage, a full roof replacement.
How fast can you get to me after a hurricane?
After a widespread storm we triage: active leaks into living space first, then everything else in the order calls came in. We are a local Jacksonville company, so we don’t leave town when the storm chasers do, and we are still here for the permanent repair.
Do you charge for emergency tarping?
Tarping is a service we quote in writing before we install it. When we go on to do the permanent repair or replacement, the estimate shows exactly how the two fit together. No surprises either way.
How can I tell if my roof has hail damage?
From the ground, look for dents in soft metals: gutters, downspouts, AC fins and vent caps. On the roof, hail leaves round bruises where granules are knocked loose. Those bruises are hard to see without being up there, so if the metals are dented, book a free inspection.
My neighbor lost shingles but my roof looks fine. Should I have it checked?
Yes. Wind that strips a neighbor’s roof usually breaks seal strips on yours, and broken seals don’t show from the ground until the next storm lifts the shingles off. A free inspection takes under an hour and comes with photos.
Should I sign an assignment of benefits with a roofer?
Florida eliminated assignment-of-benefits agreements for property insurance policies issued on or after January 1, 2023. The only document we ask you to sign is a straightforward agreement for the work you have chosen, with the price on it.

Timothy Y. “Sean & David are very professional yet sincere. They gave me a fair quote & I decided to have them redo my whole roof. Everything was done well. They were on scene, checking to make sure all went well. They even fixed the ceiling where my leak was...they are a great company and I will recommend them to everyone. Thanks again for a superb job!!! 🤙”
Melissa H. “Super easy to work with. Very professional and was able to knock out my roof repairs very quickly.”
Richard V. “Your search is over. Just go ahead and hire Shaka!
My wife and I just bought a home and noticed our detached laundry room ceiling had been leaking along with some spots above our kitchen cabinets. David and Sean came out and immediately (seriously immediately) found the problems. They found some extensive wood rot above the laundry room and some wrinkles in the flat roof above the kitchen. David and the crew were able to fix the rotted beams, replace the roof and damaged drywall in the laundry room as well as find and fix the small leaks above our kitchen. They were able to come in under budget and did a great job cleaning up afterwards. Super thankful for David, Sean and the Shaka crew and they will always be my first call! 🤙🏽”
