A roof replacement is one of the biggest jobs that will ever happen at your house, and it happens fast. Knowing what each step looks like before the trucks show up makes the whole thing easier. This is the Shaka process, start to finish, the same one we follow on every home in Jacksonville and Northeast Florida.

The seven steps

  1. Step 1: Free roof inspection

We walk the roof where it's safe, use aerial photos where it isn't, and check the attic when it's accessible: shingles, flashing, decking, ventilation and any signs of past leaks inside.

You get the honest version. If the roof can be repaired, we say so (repair is a real option). If it needs replacing, we show you why, with photos. No fee, no obligation.

  2. Step 2: The written estimate

Roof measured in squares, shingle line and color, underlayment and ice-and-water barrier, starter, ridge cap, drip edge, ventilation, flashing, the decking allowance per sheet, permit, tear-off and disposal, cleanup, schedule and warranty. If it isn't on the estimate, it isn't a surprise waiting for later.

We go through it line by line. Compare quotes with our cost guide; Hearth financing pre-qualifies in about a minute without affecting your credit score.

  3. Step 3: Permit and scheduling

Re-roofing requires a building permit and the new roof must meet the current Florida Building Code for our wind zone. We pull the permit with your county or city (Duval, St. Johns, Clay or Nassau), order materials and set the date around the weather. You get a confirmed date and a heads-up the day before.

  4. Step 4: Tear-off

Install day starts early. Landscaping is tarped, the dumpster is set, and the old roof comes off down to the decking. Florida requires the old covering to come off in a full replacement; if a previous owner layered shingles, both layers go.

Every sheet of decking is checked. Soft, rotted or delaminated sheets are replaced at the per-sheet price already on your estimate.

  5. Step 5: Underlayment, flashing and the new roof

Synthetic underlayment over the whole deck, ice-and-water barrier in the valleys and around penetrations, new drip edge, new pipe boots, vent and chimney flashing (never reused). Then starter strip, shingles to GAF's high-wind nailing pattern (or panels on their clips, or tile on its underlayment), ridge ventilation and ridge cap, installed above minimum code and to the manufacturer's specification.

  6. Step 6: Cleanup

The crew cleans as it goes, the dumpster leaves when the roof is done, and the yard, driveway, beds and gutters get a magnet sweep for nails. Customers mention the cleanup in their reviews more than almost anything else.

  7. Step 7: Final inspection and paperwork

Our own walk-through, then the county's inspection for the permit. You get the closed permit, photos of the finished roof, your warranty paperwork and, on GAF shingle roofs, the GAF Silver Pledge™ registration we complete after the final inspection. Every installation carries our 10-year workmanship warranty; details in warranties and certifications.

What to do before install day

  • Move cars out of the driveway so the dumpster and the delivery truck can get close.
  • Take fragile items off walls and shelves; a tear-off shakes the house a little.
  • Tell us about sprinklers, pets, a pool or landscaping you're worried about, so we can protect it.
  • Satellite dishes are removed and reinstalled by us; solar panels are coordinated with a solar contractor.
  • Plan for noise from early morning; most crews start at first light.

How long does it really take?

Most residential shingle replacements take one to two days. Larger or steeper roofs, multiple layers of tear-off, extensive decking repairs, metal and tile all take longer, and we tell you the expected timeline in the written estimate before any work starts.

What you can expect from us the whole way

  • Communication. You'll know who's coming, when, and what happens next, from the first call to the final walk-through.
  • No surprises. The estimate is the price. Decking is the one variable, and its per-sheet cost is already on paper.
  • Your property protected. Tarps, careful material staging, and a crew that treats the yard like their own.
  • A roof built to last. Top-tier materials, installed above minimum code, by our own crew.
