"Licensed, insured, certified, warrantied." Every roofer says some version of it, and most homeowners nod along without knowing what each word actually guarantees. Here is exactly what stands behind a Shaka Roofing roof.
The Florida license
Shaka Roofing is a Florida Certified Roofing Contractor, license number CCC1335585, issued by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). "Certified" in Florida means the license is valid statewide, not just in one county, and that the license holder passed the state exam and meets the state's experience, financial-responsibility and insurance requirements.
- Roofing work in Florida must be permitted and inspected, and only a licensed contractor can pull the permit. An unlicensed roofer either skips the permit or asks you to pull it as an "owner-builder," which puts the liability on you.
- A licensed contractor is answerable to the state. Complaints, discipline and license status are public record.
- Insurance, warranty registration and most lenders depend on it.
What insured covers
"Insured" is two different policies, and both matter:
- General liability covers damage to your property caused by the work, for example a dropped bundle through a skylight or a tarp that failed in a storm.
- Workers' compensation covers an injury to someone working on your roof. Without it, an injured worker's claim can land on the homeowner.
We carry both, and we'll provide a certificate of insurance on request, before the job, with your name on it. A roofer who can't produce one is a roofer to walk away from.
GAF certification
Shaka Roofing is a GAF Certified Plus™ Contractor. GAF is the shingle manufacturer whose products we install, and its contractor certification is something a roofer earns rather than buys: GAF evaluates roofers on licensing (in states that require it), insurance and a track record of installing to GAF's specifications before it allows them to offer its enhanced warranties.
According to GAF, "Only 7% of roofers in North America are invited to become GAF Certified™ Contractors." (source: gaf.com). It is the practical difference between a roofer who can register a GAF system warranty for you and one who can't.
- The shingles, underlayment, starter, ridge cap and ventilation are installed as a GAF system, to GAF's specification, which is also what the manufacturer's warranties require.
- GAF products carry a Florida Product Approval and are installed to GAF's high-wind nailing pattern for our wind zone.
- GAF shingle roofs we install can be registered for the GAF Silver Pledge™ limited warranty (below). Product details on our shingle roofing page.

The GAF Silver Pledge limited warranty
A standard shingle warranty covers the shingle. The Silver Pledge™ is a system warranty: it covers the GAF roofing system, including the required GAF accessory products, and it adds coverage for workmanship from GAF itself on top of ours. It is available only through GAF-certified contractors, only on roofs installed as a complete GAF system, and GAF defines the terms.
- We install the roof as a GAF system and document it.
- After the final inspection, we register the warranty with GAF and give you the paperwork.
- Coverage, duration, transferability and exclusions are set by GAF and depend on the exact products installed. We spell out which ones apply to your roof on the written estimate; the full terms are on GAF's residential warranties page.
Our 10-year workmanship warranty
Manufacturer warranties cover the product. Our warranty covers the thing most roof problems actually come from: the installation. Every Shaka Roofing roof installation includes a 10-year workmanship warranty, on shingle, metal, tile and flat roofs alike.
In plain language: if a roof we installed leaks because of how it was installed, in the first 10 years, we come back and fix it. That is a promise from the people who put the roof on, not a claim form to a company you've never met.
- Covers: defects in our workmanship, for example flashing that wasn't sealed, a pipe boot that wasn't fastened, a seam that wasn't lapped.
- Doesn't cover: storm damage, fallen trees, foot traffic, other trades (satellite installers, solar crews, pressure washers), neglected maintenance, and material defects, which fall under the manufacturer's warranty.
The written warranty you receive at the end of the job has the exact terms.
What to ask any roofer before you sign
- What is your Florida license number? Then look it up on the DBPR site. "Licensed" without a number is a red flag.
- Can I see your certificate of insurance? Liability and workers' comp, current, with your name as the certificate holder.
- Who pulls the permit? The answer should be "we do," with the permit number provided to you.
- Which manufacturer warranty applies, exactly? Product name, system or shingle-only, and who registers it.
- What is your own workmanship warranty, in writing? How long, what it covers, and who you call.
- Will the people quoting be the people installing? We use our own crew, and the estimate tells you who is coming.
